Water entering your boat: causes and initial checks
A wet bilge does not necessarily mean a major leak, but rising water must never be ignored. First establish whether the situation is stable; then search for the source methodically.

Water may enter through rainwater paths, drains, hoses, seacocks, propulsion equipment or hull damage. Where it appears is not always where it enters. Work from urgency towards origin without disabling safety equipment.
1. Establish whether the situation is safe
Check whether the water level is rising and whether the boat remains stable. Move people to safety if water is entering quickly, the source is unknown or electrical and fuel systems could create danger. Alert the marina operator or emergency services as appropriate.
2. Rule out rainwater and blocked drains
Inspect the cover, windows, hatches, vents, sealant joints and deck fittings. Check that cockpit and deck drains are clear and that a blockage is not causing water to overflow a coaming. A leak high up may travel along cables or frames before appearing elsewhere.
Dry a small area and use absorbent paper to follow the direction of a fresh trace. Mark the level and time to see whether the amount changes.
3. Inspect hoses, clips and seacocks
Inspect only what is safely accessible. Look for split hoses, displaced or corroded clips, moisture around through-hull fittings and a seacock that is not clearly in its intended position. Do not force a seized seacock.
If a connection below the waterline is in doubt, have the boat made safe and assessed. A temporary patch or extra clip is not automatically a sound repair.
4. Check the engine and propulsion area
Water may be associated with cooling hoses, exhaust parts, seals, a propeller shaft or transom fitting. Observe whether the trace changes before and during brief operation permitted by the manual, but do not start an engine if cooling, electrical or fuel safety is uncertain.
Record whether the leak appears only with the engine running, while under way, after rain or also at rest. That pattern helps narrow the search.
5. Consider damage and hidden paths
A collision, grounding, old repair or loose fitting can admit water. Inspect visible damage without lifting or supporting the boat unsafely. Water may travel between structural parts and become visible only at the lowest point.

6. Record the pattern and repair the cause
Note the weather, operating condition, water level, smell, colour and where the trace begins. Do not remove every useful sign from the bilge before taking photographs unless safety requires immediate cleaning.
Have the source repaired and test it under controlled conditions. If damp returns without a rising water level, also investigate condensation and hidden moisture sources.

Is a small amount of water in the bilge normal?
Some boats collect limited condensation or rainwater, but new, contaminated or rising water always warrants investigation.
Can I continue if the bilge pump keeps up?
Not as a general rule. A pump hides the rate of ingress and may fail. Assess the urgency, keep people safe and have the source identified.
How can I trace a small rainwater leak?
Inspect systematically from high to low after rain, dry small areas and follow fresh traces. Remember that water can travel along cables and structural parts.
