There is rarely one correct rule for every boat battery. Starter batteries, domestic banks, lead-acid batteries and lithium systems may have different requirements. Start by identifying exactly what is fitted and finding the relevant documentation.

1. Record the battery type and installation

Find the label, capacity, product code where available and the manual. Establish whether the boat has one battery, separate starter and domestic banks, or a more complex energy system. The correct charger and storage method depend on that information.

Take a clear photograph of cables and terminals before disconnecting anything. Do not rely on cable colour alone, particularly in an older installation that may have been modified.

2. Inspect it without improvising

Look for a distorted, cracked or discoloured casing. Check for corrosion, loose clamps, damaged cable insulation and signs of heat. A battery that leaks, smells strongly, becomes hot or shows physical damage needs professional assessment.

3. Understand parasitic loads

Turning off the main switch does not stop every consumer on every boat. An alarm, bilge pump, memory circuit or incorrectly connected device may remain active. Check the electrical diagram and the purpose of the installation before disconnecting anything.

If the battery becomes flat again quickly, investigate the cause. Repeated charging can conceal a failing battery, charging fault or unwanted load.

4. Use a compatible charging strategy

Use a charger that is explicitly suitable for the battery type and configuration. Do not select a charging mode by guesswork. Provide the ventilation and ambient conditions specified by the manufacturer and storage site.

Do not leave an improvised charger or extension lead unattended. Ask the winter-storage operator what power supply and charging arrangements are permitted.

5. Decide whether the battery stays on board

The choice depends on access, temperature, security, ventilation, installation and storage-site policy. If the battery is removed, keep it stable while lifting and transporting it, and prevent the terminals touching metal objects. Consider its weight and any rules for that battery type.

If safety equipment depends on the battery, do not alter the connection until you understand what will be disabled.

6. Reconnect methodically in spring

Inspect again for damage and corrosion before reconnecting. Refit the cables using your photographs and wiring information, and keep tools from bridging two terminals or a terminal and earth. Test the installation one circuit at a time.
